Sudan gained independence from Great Britain in 1956.

Two civil wars have engulfed the country for almost 30 years.

The sources of these conflicts were rooted in the economic, political and social domination by the predominantly Muslim and Arab north over the largely Christian south

 The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) and Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) groups in Darfur mobilized the government of Sudan.

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic, racial, religious or national group.

 2 million people were displaced from their homeland and an estimated 200,000 to 400,000 died as a result of the conflict.

The major sources take the majority of the rich oil export into its control.

U.S spending around $280 million annually on development and assistant projects and another $100 million on food aid.

 Sudan have a lack of basic infrastructure, including paved roads, access to clean water and health care.
